Time in Armenian

In Armenia 24 hour time is used in newspapers, on TV and in official papers and documents, but 12-hour time is used in spoken Armenian.

To start us off, the question “What time is it?” in Armenian is “Ժամը քանի՞սն է:”

If it is exactly on the hour, the answer can be:

Here are three examples:

• 3:00 Ժամը երեքն է։

• 5:00 Ժամը հինգն է։

• 11:00 Ժամը տասնմեկն է։

If it is past the hour, the word անց is used in the following manner:

• 2:15 Ժամը երկուսն անց տասնհինգ է։

• 4:30 Ժամը չորսն անց երեսուն (կես) է:

Very often the word ժամը - “the time” is omitted. Thus, people tend to read the time like this:

• 2:15 Երկուսն անց տասնհինգ է։

• 4:30 Չորսն անց երեսուն է։

If it is till the hour, the word պակաս is used in the following manner:

• 3:40 Ժամը չորսին քսան է պակաս։ OR Չորսին քսան է պակաս։

• 9:54 ժամը տասին վեց է պակաս։ OR Տասին վեց է պակաս։
