Expression of the object owned
In Hungarian there are no possessive adjectives. They are possessive suffixes which correspond to them, added with the help of a connecting vowel to words ending in consonant.
For a single owned item
Suffixe | Equivalent | Examples | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
– | – | autó (car) | ház (house) | könyv (book) |
-m | mon/ma | autóm | házam | könyvem |
-d | ton/ta | autód | házad | könyved |
-(j)a/-(j)e | son/sa | autója | háza | könyve |
-nk | notre | autónk | házunk | könyvünk |
-tok/-tek/-tök | votre | autótok | házatok | könyvetek |
-k/-juk/-jük | leur | autójuk | házuk | könyvük |
For several owned item
For several possessed objects the suffix -i
is used before the possessive suffix, except in the third person, where it is placed after the possessive suffix. A peculiarity of roots ending in a vowel is that the -i
replaces the possessive suffix. The plural causes certain changes to the suffixes used in the singular and the linking vowel, and exceptions are not uncommon.
autóim (my cars) | házaim (my houses) | könyveim (my books) |
autóid | házaid | könyveid |
autói | házai | könyvei |
autóink | házaink | könyveink |
autóitok | házaitok | könyveitek |
autóik | házaik | könyveik |
