Gujarati Grammar - Gender

Hi Gujarati learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender rules in Gujarati. We will look at the different genders and how to identify them. We will also look at some examples and practice using the gender rules. Finally, we will have a quiz to test your understanding.

Rules

In Gujarati, there are three genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. Masculine nouns usually end in -a or -u, while feminine nouns usually end in -i or -e. Neuter nouns usually end in -o or -u.

The gender of a noun affects the form of the verb used with it. For example, the verb for "to eat" is ખાવો (khāvo) when used with a masculine noun, ખાવી (khāvī) when used with a feminine noun, and ખાવે (khāve) when used with a neuter noun.

Examples

The table below shows some examples of nouns and their genders.

Gujarati Pronunciation English Translation
રાજકુમાર rājkumār prince
રાજનીતિ rājnīti politics
રાજા rājā king
રાજિની rājinī queen
રાજવાડી rājvāḍī kingdom
