Tigrinya Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Tigrinya learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Tigrinya language. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea.

Formation of Adjectives

Adjectives in Tigrinya are formed by adding suffixes to nouns and verbs. The suffixes used depend on the gender and number of the noun being modified.

Masculine Singular

For masculine singular nouns, the suffix -αŠ£α‰΅ is added to the end of the noun. For example, the word for "good" is ኣሎ (alu). To make it an adjective, the suffix -αŠ£α‰΅ is added, making it αŠ£αˆŽαŠ£α‰΅ (aluat).

Feminine Singular

For feminine singular nouns, the suffix -αŠ£α‰³ is added to the end of the noun. For example, the word for "beautiful" is αŠ£αˆαŠ£α‹ (aray). To make it an adjective, the suffix -αŠ£α‰³ is added, making it αŠ£αˆαŠ£α‹αŠ£α‰³ (arayat).

Masculine Plural

For masculine plural nouns, the suffix -αŠ£α‰Άαˆ is added to the end of the noun. For example, the word for "strong" is ኣα‰₯ል (abli). To make it an adjective, the suffix -αŠ£α‰Άαˆ is added, making it ኣα‰₯αˆαŠ£α‰Άαˆ (ablotom).

Feminine Plural

For feminine plural nouns, the suffix -αŠ£α‰Άαˆα‰³ is added to the end of the noun. For example, the word for "wise" is ኣα‰₯αˆαŠ“ (ablinna). To make it an adjective, the suffix -αŠ£α‰Άαˆα‰³ is added, making it ኣα‰₯αˆαŠ“αŠ£α‰Άαˆα‰³ (ablinnatomta).

Examples

Here are some examples of adjectives in Tigrinya:

  • αŠ£αˆŽαŠ£α‰΅ (aluat) - good (masculine singular)
  • αŠ£αˆαŠ£α‹αŠ£α‰³ (arayat) - beautiful (feminine singular)
  • ኣα‰₯αˆαŠ£α‰Άαˆ (ablotom) - strong (masculine plural)
