Central Khmer Grammar - How to Ask Questions

Hi Central Khmer learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be learning how to ask questions in Central Khmer. Asking questions is an important part of any language, and Central Khmer is no exception. We will look at the different types of questions, as well as the grammar rules for forming them. By the end of this lesson, you should have a good understanding of how to ask questions in Central Khmer.

Types of Questions

There are two main types of questions in Central Khmer: yes/no questions and wh-questions.

Yes/No Questions

Yes/no questions are used to ask for a simple yes or no answer. They are formed by using the particle ឬ (rə) at the end of the sentence. For example:

  • អ្នកបានទាញយកអាហារមួយឬ? (nə́k bɑn tɨɲ yɑk ʔa.hɑː məy rə?) - Did you buy some food?

Wh-Questions

Wh-questions are used to ask for more detailed information. They are formed by using the particle ដែល (dael) at the beginning of the sentence. For example:

  • ដែលអ្នកបានទាញយកអាហារ? (dael nə́k bɑn tɨɲ yɑk ʔa.hɑː?) - What did you buy?

Grammar Rules

When forming questions in Central Khmer, there are a few grammar rules that you need to keep in mind.

  • The verb comes first in the sentence.
  • The subject comes after the verb.
  • The particle ឬ (rə) is used for yes/no questions.
  • The particle ដែល (dael) is used for wh-questions.

For example:

  • អ្នកបានទាញយកអាហារមួយឬ? (nə́k bɑn tɨɲ yɑk ʔa.hɑː məy rə?) - Did you buy some food?
  • ដែលអ្នកបានទាញយកអាហារ? (dael nə́k bɑn tɨɲ yɑk ʔa.hɑː?) - What did you buy?

Practice

Now that you know the basics of asking questions in Central Khmer, let's practice! Try translating the following sentences into Central Khmer.

  • Where did you go?

ដែលអ្នកបានទៅទីណា? (dael nə́k bɑn təv tii nɑ?)

  • Did you eat dinner?

អ្នកបានបរិភោគអាហារម្ហូបឬ? (nə́k bɑn bɑː rəpʰtɔɔk ʔa.hɑː məhəm bɑ rə?)

  • What did you do yesterday?

អ្នកបានធ្វើអ្វីនៅថ្ងៃម្សិលមិញដែល? (nə́k bɑn təv ʔvəy nəv təŋəy məsəl mɪɲ dael?)
