Hi Tatar learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender of nouns in Tatar. Understanding the gender of nouns is essential for proper grammar and pronunciation.

Gender is a grammatical category that is used to distinguish between nouns that refer to male and female beings. In Tatar, nouns are either masculine or feminine. There is no neuter gender.

Masculine Nouns

Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant. Here are some examples:

Tatar Pronunciation English Translation
ат at father
бала bála grandfather
дөнья dönnya world
китап kitáp book
хаким khákim mayor

Feminine Nouns

Feminine nouns usually end in a vowel. Here are some examples:

Tatar Pronunciation English Translation
ана ána mother
баба bába grandmother
доня dónya lady
китаб kitáb book
хакима khákima mayor's wife

Exceptions

There are some exceptions to the rules above. For example, some nouns can be both masculine and feminine. Here are some examples:

Tatar Pronunciation English Translation
адам ádam man/woman
