Sanaani Arabic Vocabulary - Colors

In this lesson, we will learn the names of colors in Sanaani Arabic. Colors play an important role in our daily lives and in our culture. For example, did you know that in Yemen, the color green symbolizes life and paradise, while the color black symbolizes death and mourning? Let's dive into the colorful world of Sanaani Arabic!

Basic Colors[edit | edit source]

In Sanaani Arabic, we have several basic colors. Here are some of them:

Sanaani Arabic Pronunciation English
أحمر /ʔaħmar/ Red
أصفر /ʔaṣfar/ Yellow
أخضر /ʔakẓar/ Green
أسود /ʔaswad/ Black
أزرق /ʔazraq/ Blue

For example:

  • Person 1: هذه الوردة حمراء (Hathihi alwarda ħamra') (This rose is red.)
  • Person 2: نعم، إنها جميلة. (Na'am, 'inhā jamīlah.) (Yes, it's beautiful.)

Here are more colors in Sanaani Arabic:

Sanaani Arabic Pronunciation English
بني /bunni/ Brown
رمادي /ramādī/ Gray
برتقالي /burtuqlālī/ Orange
وردي /wardī/ Pink
بنفسجي /banafsajī/ Purple
لون البحر /lawn albaħr/ Sea blue

For example:

  • Person 1: لون سماء جميل اليوم هو أزرق (Lawn samā' jamīl alyawm huwa 'azraq.) (The beautiful color of the sky today is blue.)
  • Person 2: أوافقك الرأي, ويمكن أن نستمتع بالطقس اللطيف. (ʾawāfiqak al-ra'y, waymkn 'anstmta' bialṭghs allṭyf.) (I agree with you, and we can enjoy the nice weather.)

Color Idioms[edit | edit source]

Colors are not only used to describe objects, but they are also used in Arabic idioms. Here are some examples:

  • اللون الأسود: يعبر عن الموت والحزن (al-lawn al-'aswad: ya'barra 'an al-mawt wal-ḥuzn) (The color black represents death and mourning)
  • اللون الأصفر: يعبر عن الخيانة (al-lawn al-'aṣfar: ya'barra 'an al-khayānah) (The color yellow represents betrayal)
  • اللون الأخضر: يعبر عن الأمل والحياة (al-lawn al-'akẓar: ya'barra 'an al-'amal wal-ḥayāh) (The color green represents hope and life)
