The Days of the Week[edit | edit source]
Learning the days of the week in Western Frisian is easy. The main difference from English is that the first day of the week in Western Frisian is Monday, just like in most of mainland Europe.
Western Frisian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Moandei | /ˈmo:n.dɛi/ | Monday |
Tiisdei | /ˈti:s.dɛi/ | Tuesday |
Woansdei | /ˈwo:nz.dɛi/ | Wednesday |
Tongersdei | /tɔŋ.ərz.ˈdɛi/ | Thursday |
Freed | /fre:d/ | Friday |
Snein | /snein/ | Sunday |
Saterdei | /sɑ.tər.ˈdɛi/ | Saturday |
Culture and Fun Facts[edit | edit source]
In Western Frisian, the weekend is called "wykein". It comes from the words "wyk" meaning "week" and "ein" meaning "end".
Did you know that Western Frisians have a different system for naming the days of the week? They have "dei nei moandei" (day after Monday) for Tuesday, "dei nei tiisdei" (day after Tuesday) for Wednesday, and so on. In spoken language, this is quite common, especially in rural areas where Western Frisian is still the main language.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Here's a dialogue to practice the days of the week in context:
- Person 1: Wat diesto snein? (What are you doing on Sunday?)
- Person 2: Ik giet nei tsjerketoer. (I am going to church.)
- Person 1: En hjoed? (And today?)
- Person 2: Hjoed is freed. Ik bin frij. (Today is Friday. I am free.)
