Tatar Vocabulary - Drinks

Hi Tatar learners! 😊
In this lesson, we are going to learn some basic Tatar drink vocabulary. We'll start with the most common drinks and their pronunciation.

Tea[edit | edit source]

Tea (чай) is one of the most popular drinks in Tatar culture. Tea is traditionally poured from a teapot known as a самовар (samovar) which is heated by burning charcoal. Hot water is added to the teapot, and then loose tea is added. The samovar continues to heat the tea throughout the day, and fresh water and tea are added as necessary. Tea is served with sweets or biscuits.

  • Person 1: Мин чай ичә алармын. (Min chai ichä alarmın.)
  • Person 2: Яңы чай җибәрәү? (Yañı chai җibäräw?)
  • Person 1: Әйе, будай ике мәшинадан. (Äye, buday ike mäşinadan.)
  • Person 2: Аларның нисек сүрәтен кире. (Alarnıñ nisek süretän kire.)
  • Person 1: Сәхәт соңса, бәйләр өстен Томенлекке торам. (Sähät sonsa, bäylär östen Tomenlekke toram.)

Translation:

  • Person 1: I'll take tea.
  • Person 2: Shall we make fresh tea?
  • Person 1: Sure, we have enough from the two machines.
  • Person 2: They will come from the chrome pot.
  • Person 1: When we finish, let's go to the Tomenlek.

Coffee[edit | edit source]

Coffee (кофе) is also a popular drink in Tatar culture. Traditional Tatar coffee is known as чөйек (chöyek) and is served in a small cup with a handle. Cardamom is typically added to the coffee grounds for flavoring.

  • Person 1: Безне кана кофе бирү түбән байлап биреңнәр? (Bezne kana kofe birü tübän bəylap bireñnär?)
  • Person 2: Кәтирә, бирәрле югарга. (Kätirä, birärlä yugarğa.)

Translation:

  • Person 1: Can we make some coffee for ourselves and our guests?
  • Person 2: Sure, let's make it together.

Milk[edit | edit source]

Milk (сәңе) is a common drink, especially for children. In Tatar culture, fresh milk is often consumed within a few hours after milking, and is served warm.

  • Person 1: Сәңе етәм, зур. (Säñe etäm, zur.)
  • Person 2: Сәхәт соңы биригә ягы кергәнде чай ичәтмәгем. (Sähät sonı birigä yağı kergände chai icätmeğem.)

Translation:

  • Person 1: I'm going to drink milk, want some?
  • Person 2: When we come back from the walk, let's have some tea.

Juice[edit | edit source]

Fruit juice (суык) is a refreshing drink, especially in the summer months when temperatures can be high. Tatar juice is often made from fresh fruit, such as apples or berries, that have been picked in the garden.

  • Person 1: Безгә суык тегез поңчикке? (Bezgä suıq tegez poñçikke?)
  • Person 2: Тегез суык бар гә? (Tegez suıq bar gö?)

Translation:

  • Person 1: Can we put some juice for the children in small glasses?
  • Person 2: Do we have any small glasses for juice?

Water (сыр) is a basic drink that everyone needs to stay hydrated. Tatar tap water is generally safe to drink, but many prefer to drink bottled water.

  • Person 1: Мине бир стакан сыр бирексең? (Mine bir stakan sür bireksäñ?)
  • Person 2: Буйру; әмма сен бер тоймада сыр дөкөми бар. (Buıru; ämma sen ber toymada sür dükömi bar.)

Translation:

  • Person 1: Can you give me a glass of water?
  • Person 2: Sure, but you can find the water dispenser over there.

Soft drinks[edit | edit source]

Soft drinks (газлык суык) are popular among Tatar youth. Coke and Fanta are among the most popular brands of soft drinks in Tatarstan.

  • Person 1: Былай бурын шикелдеге, магазинга геч бауланы, газлык суык әйләнәм? (Bılaj burın şıkeldägä, mağazinga geç baulanı, gazlək suıq äylänäm?)
  • Person 2: Әйып, ә олдан бар сезның мәхәббәти. (Äyeyp, ä oldan bar sezniñ mähäbbäti.)

Translation:

  • Person 1: Can we stop by the store on the way home and get some soft drinks?
  • Person 2: No, you had better done the shopping before.
