Swiss German tongue twisters[edit | edit source]

So, there are not many people out there speaking Swiss German and there are also a lot of differencies in the Swiss dialects.

As there are no fixed rules, how to write Swiss German, I'm just writing in the most common way from the place I come from in eastern Switzerland.

Just remember, that probably each Swiss you ask will tell you something else, how these sentences should be wrote.

De Papst hät z'Spiez s Späckbsteck z'spot bschtellt. Der Papst hat in Spiez das Speckbesteck zu spät bestellt. The pope has ordered the bacon cutlery too late in Spiez.

Z'Basel uff der Rhybrugg stöhnd drei 

dööri, hohli, langi, leeri Röhrli und dor die drei dööre, hohle, lange, leere Röhrli lehred d' Lüüt rächt rede.

In Basel auf der Rheinbrücke stehen drei

dürre, hohle, lange, leere Röhrchen

und durch diese drei 

dürren, hohlen, langen, leeren Röhrchen 

lernen die Leute, richtig zu sprechen.

In Basel on the Rhine bridge stand three dry, hollow, long, empty straws and through these three dry, hollow, long, empty straws, the people learn to talk right.
Lüscher-Lütis Lüüti lüütet lüter als Lüti-Lüschers Lüüti lüütet Lüscher-Lütis Glocke läutet lauter als die Lüti-Lüscher Glocke läutet. Lüscher-Lütis' bell rings louder than the bell of Lüti-Lüscher's does.
Hinder Hanses-Heiris Huus hani hundert Hase ghöre hueschte. Hinter Hanses-Heiris Haus hörte ich hundert Hasen husten. I heard 100 hares coughing behind Hanses-Heiri's house.
