Southern Uzbek Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Southern Uzbek learners! 😊

Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Southern Uzbek, adjectives are quite easy to distinguish since they always come before the noun they modify. For example:

Southern Uzbek Pronunciation English
yaxshi kitob jaxshi kitob good book katta uy katta uj big house qizg'in ayol qizghin ajol beautiful woman yomon ovqat yomon oftat bad food baland tog' baland to‘g‘ high mountain sovuq qish sovuq qish cold winter

Note that adjectives do not change form based on the gender or number of the noun they modify, unlike in some other languages.

Comparative and Superlative Forms[edit | edit source]

To compare two or more things, we use the comparative form. To form the comparative, we add the suffix "-roq" to the end of the adjective. For example:

Southern Uzbek Pronunciation English
yaxshi jaxshi good yaxshiroq jaxshiroq better qizg'in qizghin beautiful qizghiniroq qizghinirroq more beautiful sovuq sovuq cold sovuqroq sovuqroq colder

To compare three or more things, we use the superlative form. To form the superlative, we add the suffix "-ta'm" to the end of the adjective. For example:

Southern Uzbek Pronunciation English
yaxshi jaxshi good yaxshitam jaxshitam the best qizg'in qizghin beautiful qizghintam qizghinitam the most beautiful sovuq sovuq cold sovuqtam sovuqtam the coldest

To use these forms in a sentence, we can use the following structure: "Comparative: noun 1 adjective-roq, noun 2" "Superlative: noun adjective-tam"

Adverbs as Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Southern Uzbek, it is common to use adverbs to modify nouns. To do this, we simply use the adverb right before the noun. For example:

Southern Uzbek Pronunciation English
tez mashina tez mashina fast car (tez = fast, but used as an adjective here) qulay armaturni iste'mol qilish qulay armatur’ni iste‘mol qilish use convenient tool (qulay = convenient, but used as an adjective here) yaxshi ko‘ngil jaxshi ko‘ngil good heart (yaxshi = good, but used as an adjective here)

Note that adverbs do not change form to agree with the noun they modify, unlike adjectives.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Here's a dialogue between two friends, illustrating the use of adjectives:

  • Ali: Salom Behzod! So'ngi kitobni qayerda sotib olding?
  • Behzod: Salom Ali! Toshkentda sotib oldim. Kitob juda yaxshi edi!
  • Ali: Kitob avval sotilgan bo'lganidan keyin bir necha yaxshi sharhlarni eshitganman. Men ham sotib olaman!
  • Behzod: Albatta, undan yaxshisi yo'q.
  • Ali: Qizg'in sharh aytma, xolda yozilsaydi yaxshi bo'lardimu.
  • Behzod: Sizga qanday qilib bilamiz!

Translation:

  • Ali: Hi Behzod! Where did you buy the latest book?
  • Behzod: Hi Ali! I bought it in Tashkent. The book was very good!
  • Ali: After hearing many good reviews about the book, I also want to buy it!
  • Behzod: Of course, nothing is better than it!
  • Ali: Don't say that the reviews are good, it would be better if they were written in details.
  • Behzod: How should we know that!

We hope that through our lesson, you have learned more about adjectives in Southern Uzbek and how to use them in sentences. Remember to practice with native speakers on Polyglot Club to improve your language skills!
