Yemeni educational system consists of 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of middle school, and 3 years of high school. Elementary school is mandatory while high school is optional. The first year of elementary school is considered the foundation year, where students learn basic skills, including the Arabic alphabet, numeracy, and Islamic studies. In middle and high school, students prepare for the Thanawiya exam or the General Secondary Education Certificate. This exam determines whether students can go to university or not.
