In today's lesson you will learn some vocabulary related to the Family in the Mohawk language.

Mohawk is a Native American language spoken by the Mohawk people, who are members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. In this lesson, we will learn about the vocabulary for family members in Mohawk.

Here are the Mohawk terms for immediate family members:

  • Ónenhste - mother
  • Rakeni - father
  • Nía:wen - thank you (used to address parents as a sign of respect)
  • Wáhta - maple syrup
  • Skén:nen - peace
  • Tewá:ken - older brother
  • Tewá:ken'se - older sister
  • Otsisá:ra - younger brother
  • Otsisá:ra'se - younger sister
  • Shé:kon - greetings (used to address siblings)

Here are the Mohawk terms for some extended family members:

  • Ónenhste - grandmother
  • Róntha - grandfather
  • Onkwehón:we - aunt
  • Táhnon - uncle
  • Awehentá:ron - cousin
  • Oserá:ke - nephew

It is important to note that the Mohawk language uses gender-neutral terms for some family members. For example, the term "Tewá:ken" can refer to an older brother or older sister, depending on the gender of the speaker.
