Days of the Week[edit | edit source]

Below is a table showing the days of the week in Kashmiri, along with their pronunciation and English translation:

Kashmiri Pronunciation English
کہنچھو (kahinchho) /ka.ɦin.tʃo/ Monday
بدھ (bud'h) /buɖ / Tuesday
اتھوار (athwaar) /ətʰ.waːɾ/ Wednesday
برآسون (baraasun) /ba.ɾaː.su.n / Thursday
جمعہ (jumah) /dʒu.mə/ Friday
ہفتہ (haftha) /ɦəf.tʰaː/ Saturday
اتوار (atwaar) /ət.waːɾ/ Sunday

In Kashmiri, the first day of the week is Monday, rather than Sunday like in the United States and some other countries.

Cultural Information[edit | edit source]

In Kashmir, Friday is considered the most important day of the week. It is the day when Muslims gather in mosques for Jummah prayers. The government of Jammu and Kashmir also observes a holiday on Fridays.

Another important day in Kashmir is Eid al-Fitr, a three-day celebration marking the end of Ramadan. It is a time for Muslims to give thanks, exchange gifts, and participate in feasts and other festivities.

Fun Facts[edit | edit source]

- In many Indian calendars, Sunday is known as Ravivar, which is a reference to the Hindu god Ravi, the sun god. - The word "Saturday" comes from the ancient Roman god Saturn, who was associated with agriculture and wealth. - The days of the week were traditionally named after the seven planets known in ancient astronomy, which included the sun and the moon.

Let's practice using the days of the week in a dialogue:

  • Person 1: آج کہنچھو ئی۔ (Aaj kahinchho ei.) (Today is Monday.)
  • Person 2: کیے، کیوں؟ اج کہنچھو (kyei, kyun? Aj kahinchho?) (Why, today is Monday?)
  • Person 1: میں تہ ہفتہ کرام دھاری تھن۔ (Mein ta haftha karaam dhari than.) (I have an appointment on Saturday.)
  • Person 2: تہ، تہ منزله نئٹھ۔ (Tha, tha manzilah neith.) (Sure, sure, no problem.)

Remember, practice makes perfect! Keep using these words in your everyday conversations to improve your Kashmiri language skills.
