Colors in Central Khmer[edit | edit source]

In Central Khmer, colors are straightforward. However, instead of having specific words for all the colors, the Khmer language combines two or three words to form the different colors. For example, to say the color green, you would say "Sdao Chrom" "Sdao" means "Green," and "Chrom" means "Color." You can modify Chrom, depending on the object's color you are trying to describe.

Here are some examples of colors in Central Khmer.

Central Khmer Pronunciation English

Note: For some colors, we omitted the word "Chrom" because they are not necessary to convey the intended color.

Fun Facts[edit | edit source]

Did you know that the earliest form of color came from using natural elements such as roots, berries, and barks? These elements were then used to create dyes that colored clothing, textiles, and even cave paintings. This method was still the primary source of dyes until synthetic dyes were discovered in the mid-19th century.

One interesting fact about colors in Khmer culture is that each day of the week has its own color. It is believed that wearing the appropriate color of the day can bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. Here are the colors for each day of the week:

  • αžαŸ’αž„αŸƒβ€‹αž’αžΆαž‘αž·αžαŸ’αž™ (Sunday): αžαŸ€αžœ (white)
