In Central Atlas Tamazight, the word for education is "tamɣarut" ( ⵜⴰⵎⵖⴰⵔⵓⵜ). Education is an important aspect of life and society in Tamazgha (North Africa). Education in the Tamazight-speaking regions has a long history, dating back to the pre-colonial era. Formal education in the Tamazight-speaking regions started during the French colonial occupation.

Levels of Education[edit | edit source]

In Central Atlas Tamazight, there are several levels of education. Here are some vocabulary words related to each level:

Primary Education[edit | edit source]

Primary education is known as "tamɣarut taɣelnawt" ( ⵜⴰⵎⵖⴰⵔⵓⵜ ⵜⴰⴳⵍⵏⴰⵡⵜ). The word "taɣelnawt" means basic or elementary.

Secondary Education[edit | edit source]

Secondary education is known as "tamɣarut n usamasan" ( ⵜⴰⵎⵖⴰⵔⵓⵜ ⵏ ⵓⵙⴰⵎⴰⵙⴰⵏ). The word "usamasan" means secondary.

Higher Education[edit | edit source]

Higher education is known as "tamɣarut n tfaska" ( ⵜⴰⵎⵖⴰⵔⵓⵜ ⵏ ⵜⴼⴰⵙⴽⴰ). The word "tfaska" means university.

Here is an example conversation between two Central Atlas Tamazight speakers discussing education:

  • Person 1: "Tamɣarut tazrawt n usamasan testtaɛref d widak nsufɣa." (Education and the secondary school diploma are very important for future prospects.)
  • Person 2: "Ayuz dgira aya, yal amkan-aɣ kkawen tfaska n umnaɣ d ṭṭras azzayri." (Absolutely, my son is studying at the University of Algiers.)

Culture[edit | edit source]

Tamazight-speaking regions are known for their traditional educational practices, which often involved Qur'anic schools. These schools, known as "madrasas," were institutions where children learned the Qur'an and Islamic studies. Madrasas often had a strong influence on local communities and were responsible for shaping the social and cultural values of the region. Tamazight-speaking regions were also known for their oral traditions, which were often passed down through poetry and other forms of storytelling.
