Numbers 1-10[edit | edit source]

Let's start with the numbers from 1 to 10. In Bosnian, the syntax for numbers is the same as in English: the units come before the tens. For example, 11 is read as "eleven" in English and "jedanaest" in Bosnian, which literally means "one ten and one."

Here are the Bosnian numbers from 1 to 10:

Bosnian Pronunciation English
jedan ['jɛdan] (yeh-dahn) one
dva [dva] (d-vah) two
tri [tri] (tree) three
četiri ['ʧɛtiri] (chay-tee-ree) four
pet [pɛt] (peht) five
šest [ʃɛst] (shest) six
sedam ['sɛdam] (seh-dam) seven
osam ['ɔsam] (oh-sam) eight
devet ['dɛvɛt] (deh-vet) nine
deset [dɛsɛt] (deh-set) ten

Here's an example dialogue to help you see these numbers in context:

  • Person 1: Koliko ljudi dolazi na rođendan? (How many people are coming to the birthday party?)
  • Person 2: Četiri. (Four.)
  • Person 1: Super, taman si doneo četiri torte. (Great, you just brought four cakes.)

Fun Facts[edit | edit source]

- Bosnian numbers come from Old Church Slavonic which, along with Latin, served as the liturgical language of the Bosnian Church in the middle ages.

- In Bosnia, it is common to have a "slava" which is a celebration of the family's patron saint. During this event, you will often hear people say the number "trojica" which means "a group of three men." This term has religious connotations and refers to the Holy Trinity.

- Did you know that the Bosnian language has two words for the number "one"? Yes, that's right. We use "jedan" as the cardinal number, as in "one dog," and "jedan" or "jedna" as the indefinite article, as in "a dog" or "an apple."
