It is interesting to know that some fruits have unique Tigrinya names based on their origin, shape, or color. For instance, avocado in Tigrinya is called "kalfat," which means a butter pear. Pineapple is called "kemaskero," which means "foreign banana" in Tigrinya because it was first introduced to Eritrea as a foreign fruit. Similarly, "berhan" (banana) is believed to be an Ethiopian word, and "magena" (apricot) is of Arabic origin.

Did you know that the most popular fruit in Eritrea is banana, commonly known as "berhan" in Tigrinya? Berhan is not only eaten as a fruit but is also used as an ingredient in various types of Eritrean dishes, such as a banana stew. Also, Tigrinya has unique names for fruits like shint, which means a tasty fruit, and hizib, which means a fragrant fruit.
