South Azerbaijani Grammar - Pronouns

In this lesson, we will focus on pronouns in South Azerbaijani language. Pronouns are important in any language as they replace nouns and help avoid repetition. Knowing the different types of pronouns and their proper usage is key to speaking South Azerbaijani fluently. Let's get started!

Subject Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Subject pronouns are used as the subject of the sentence. They replace the person or thing performing the action. In South Azerbaijani, subject pronouns are:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
من man I
سن sen You (singular)
او u He/She/It
ما ma We
سیز siz You (plural)
اونلار onlar They

Here's an example dialogue using subject pronouns:

  • Person 1: سن خوبسان؟ (Sen xübsənsiz?) (How are you?)
  • Person 2: من خوبام، سگه‌ري تنك ياتاپ‌دير. (Man xubam, saqqərli tənəkkü yatıb-dir) (I'm good, just tired from work.)

Object Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Object pronouns are used to replace the object of the sentence. They take the position of the noun being replaced. In South Azerbaijani, object pronouns are:

مني mani Me
سني seni You (singular)
اونو onu Him/Her/It
ماني mani Us
سیزی sizə You (plural)
اونلاري onları Them

Here's an example dialogue using object pronouns:

  • Person 1: سن اونو گئوردوم. (Sen onu gətirdin.) (You brought him.)
  • Person 2: اوني مني بئیلساڭیز اونو پوختیم. (Oni mani bəylsəyinz onu boğacaqıq.) (If he messes with me, we'll take care of him.)

Possessive Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Possessive pronouns show ownership or possession of an object. They agree in gender and number with the noun they replace. In South Azerbaijani, the possessive pronouns are:

مينيم diminəm Mine
سنين sənin Your (singular)
اونون onun His/Hers/Its
بيزين bizin Our
سیزين sizin Your (plural)
اونلارين onların Their

Here's an example dialogue using possessive pronouns:

  • Person 1: اونو گئسلدیم كهدي چكمه‌؟ (Onu görəsildik mi qədər çəkmə?) (Did we see his shoes?)
  • Person 2: اونون زين چكمه‌لریندان بيري‌‌دين مندهديم. (Onun zin çəkmələrindən biri-din məndəhidim.) (I had one of his shoes with me.)

Reflexive Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Reflexive pronouns indicate that the action of the verb is being performed by the same person or thing that is receiving the action. In South Azerbaijani, the reflexive pronouns are:

خودون xodun Myself/Himself/Herself/Itself
باش بىق baş biq Ourselves/ Yourselves/ Themselves

Here's an example dialogue using reflexive pronouns:

  • Person 1: بعضی دوران قرار گوش کردن به خودون رو نمی‌دن. (Bəzi döran qərar goş kərdən xoduna rü nemidən.) (Sometimes they forget to listen to themselves.)
  • Person 2: سیزی بیلی پنچه بار مکررات اوزونو بالدي‌گينيزمی اوتورسوزلئ‌دینزئ‌؟ (Siz bili-bəş dəfə məkrarat özünü balğıdıqınızmı otursuzla-dınızmı?) (Do you know if you sit straight five times a day, it means you are confident?)

Interrogative Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions. In South Azerbaijani, the interrogative pronouns are:

چۆن çün How
چی çi What
هأر haqr Which
kéçə Where
كيم kim Who/Whom
yerdə Where
nileyə Why
keçe When

Here's an example dialogue using interrogative pronouns:

  • Person 1: كيم كالاپ‌دی؟ (Kim qalıb-dı?) (Who stayed?)
  • Person 2: سن بئلمي‌يورم. (Sen bilmirsin.) (You don't know.)

Remember, South Azerbaijani pronouns are very important in conversation. Using the wrong pronoun can mean the difference between a clear message and a confusing one.
