  • The best way to learn languages.

    • Do you think the current education system in Belgium is good enough to learn a foreign language?
  • If not, what would you change?
    • I think that the current education system is good enough to learn a foreign language but I would change the manner of teaching foreign languages.
    • Most of the time, teachers use books page by page.
    • They forget that the final purpose is to communicate, interact, and become fluent.
    • I have two sons and we did home-schooling for years till secondary school.
    • Every day, we were used to studying English for half an hour.
    • They learned listening, writing, reading, and obviously speaking English.
    • We used a book but in an intelligent manner, in order to create speaking opportunities.
    • Have you ever spent more than one month somewhere to learn the language?
    • Unfortunately, I have never spent time somewhere to learn a language.
    • But when I was at school to become a primary school teacher, I went to Slovakia to teach French in a high school for one month.
  • I remember that the teacher was used to using “La semaine de Français”.
  • Once I offered the students a different activity to talk, exchange, and give their opinion.
  • But it failed because they were totally lost.
  • What’s the best way to learn a foreign language?
  • First, the best way to learn a language is probably to get a background by studying in a good book or having a course with a teacher and other students.
    • Thanks to this first step you will get enough vocabulary, grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and interaction to become more and more proficient and fluent.
  • Second, you should practice.
    • I think that the best manner to practice is to find a buddy language.
    • A native speaker will really help you to reach your goal.
  • What do you think about immersion at school?
  • Immersion at school is a good thing.
    • It’s proved that children learn easier languages than adults.
  • If your children are interested in languages, immersion at school is a good opportunity.
  • Do you think English could become a universal language?
  • I think English is already an international language. Isn’t it?
  • If you have to choose between Dutch and English, which one has the priority?
  • I think that Dutch is very important if you work in the north part of Belgium or in the tourism sector.
  • But English is more useful than Dutch.
  • Thanks to English, you can meet interesting people from all around the world.
  • Why is it important in a country like Belgium to speak more than just French?
    • First of all, it is very important to talk several languages in Belgium because we have three official languages.
  • It’s a part of our culture.
  • Second, Belgium is a tiny country.
    • Despite I’m very proud to be Belgian, I consider myself a world citizen.
  • Do you agree that everybody should speak two languages in Belgium?
    • For sure it’s a trump to speak several languages.
    • But when I hear ’everybody should speak two languages in Belgium’, I’m thinking of a kind of obligation that really disturbs me.
    • In the same vein, everybody should be able to fix one’s car, cut hair, bake bread, or whatever you can imagine.
