  • The abstract of my end of study

  • My end-of-study work is to understand what can prevent a caregiver from accompanying a grieving family in a palliative care setting.
  • In my situation, I experienced for the first time the death of a patient whom I took into care in a cancer follow-up care unit.
    • Following the death, I was unable to accompany the family in mourning.
    • Through a theoretical framework, I then did research on concepts that put a brake on this accompaniment.
    • Among others, I defined death.
  • I worked on the caregiver's emotions, his defense mechanisms, his attachment to the patient, the counter-transference...
  • Then I found solutions so that the caregiver could accompany the family in mourning despite its affects.
  • I ended up describing what the specific needs of grieving families were so that I could accompany them well.
  • Afterwards, I conducted a survey in the form of an individual interview with three nurses who worked or had worked in wards where palliative care is available.
  • The survey analysis showed similarities but also differences in what may prevent the caregiver from accompanying a grieving family.
  • Indeed, the affects of the carers when they take them into account and that they are worked on can on the contrary value a quality accompaniment.
  • My experiences have led me to ask myself if there is a causal link between the experience, the professional experience and the quality of support for a grieving family.
  • Key words : Accompaniment, family, grief, palliative care, death, emotions, defense mechanism, attachment, affects
