Date Event
June 19, 1862 birth in Calamba, south of Manila (Laguna). Raised at the Jesuit school in Manila, he discovered artistic gifts of all kinds (painting, sculpture, literature). He then studied at Santo Tomas University in Manila. He became a poet, graduated in philosophy and doctor in medicine.
1882 first trip to Europe. While continuing his studies in Madrid, where he graduated, he took part in the intellectual life of cities such as Barcelona, โ€‹โ€‹London, Berlin and Paris.
1887 his first novel entitled Noli me tangere (Don't touch me) is published in Berlin. The work depicts the suffering of the Filipino people under Spanish tyranny.
1888 he founded the Liga Filipina in Hong Kong, which is in permanent contact with the Philippines.
1891 publication of his second book El Filibusterismo (Rebellion). His works with a nationalist tendency circulate under cover in the archipelago. When the Cuban war broke out, he asked to be posted as a military doctor in Cuba. His request was accepted, but during his transfer to Spain he was arrested and had to return to Manila, where he was held at Fort Santiago. He was then exiled to Dapitan, north of Mindanao, for four years.
1895 alongside the growing guerrilla war, Rizal serves as a scapegoat for the Spaniards. On October 23, he found himself the victim of a mock trial.
1896 December 30, Rizal is shot by the Spanish authorities. He left behind the Ultimo Adios, a superb poem composed in his cell and which became the national anthem without music, learned by schoolchildren.
1502 birth in a noble family of Zumarraga.
1528 disappointed by the sharing of the family fortune (all of it goes to his older brother), he embarks for Mexico.
1528 to 1559 civil governor of Mexico City.
1564 he is commissioned by the Viceroy of New Spain to lead an expedition to the Spice Islands (Moluccas).
February 13, 1565 Legaspi and his crew arrive in the Philippines, on the island of Cebu.
March 16, 1565 Legaspi makes a blood pact with the tribal chief of Bohol (a sculpture still marks the place today).
April 27, 1565 Legaspi builds the bases of the first Spanish colonies in Cรฉbu.
1567 2,000 soldiers and peasants arrive as reinforcements to occupy the island of Cรฉbu.
1569 start of the conquest of Manila.
June 24, 1571 Legaspi signs a peace treaty with the inhabitants of Manila and forms a Spanish community which will settle in Intramuros (whose construction begins). He became the first Spanish Governor General of the Philippines and worked to convert the natives to the Catholic religion.
August 20, 1572 he died in Manila.
