Negations in the Arabic language

In this lesson, I will explain to you some of the negation rules in Arabic and their common usage.

لا - لــم - لــن - لـيس - لـيست There are many other ways for negation in Arabic, I've just introduced some of them.

( la'a) لا Negation for verbs in the present tense:

  • This man doesn't work with us. هذا الرجل لا يعمل معنا
  • They don't speak Arabic. هم لا يتكلمون العربية
  • She doesn't know anything about the truth. هي لا تعلم شيئاً عن الحقيقة

( Lam) لم Negation for verbs in the past tense:

  • These guys didn't attend the party yesterday. هؤلاء الرجال لم يحضروا الحفلة بالأمس
  • We're sorry, we didn't tell you about that. نحن آسفون أننا لم نخبركم بالأمر:
  • He didn't bring his cellphone with him. هو لم يجلب هاتفه الخلوي معه

( Lan ) لــن Negation for verbs in the future tense:

  • The workers won't come tomorrow. لن يأتوا العاملون غدا
  • Smoking will not be allowed during the meeting. لن يسمح بالتدخين خلال اللقاء
  • I won't help you, because I'll be busy tonight. لن أستطيع مساعدتكم، لأني سأكون مشغول هذه الليلة
