Climate

The climate is generally temperate. The Atlantic influence brings mildness and moisture to the coastal area and beyond. Temperatures are higher in the interior, where summers can be very hot and winters harsh. In the south, winters are milder and seawater is perfect for swimming.

For example, here is the Climate of Lisbon

Winter

It is common to wear a t-shirt in December or January on a sunny terrace. At night it can be chilly with temperatures around 10 degrees, but during the day in the sun, it is not uncommon to reach 20-25 degrees!

Fall and Spring

Autumn and spring are known for their rainy periods, but always with very pleasant temperatures and frequent hot days.

Summer

The atmosphere in August is slightly warmer than in July, although at first glance, the climatic conditions are identical. While in the north, the climate is perfect, in the south, the heat may disturb the most sensitive.

Gastronomy

Portugal is full of culinary treasures!

With centuries of colonization around the world, the Portuguese gastronomy has become internationalized.

bom apetite!

Here are some of the best dishes:

Bacalhau

Fried as an appetizer or in pieces for dishes. An old proverb says that there are more Bacalhau recipes ("morue" in Portuguese) as days in the year.

Sardinhas

With 1800 km of coastline, Portugal loves fishes. Cod obviously, but also sardines, seafood and all that can bring the Atlantic.

The cost of living

The cost of living is sometimes underestimated by Europeans who wish to settle there. As an example, check what are the differences in cost of living between France and Portugal.

Taxation

The Portuguese Government appealed to French pensioners by offering them total tax exemption for a period of ten years after the first installation. The main condition to benefit from this scheme is advantageous to reside at least 6 months per year in Portugal. Once this period of ten years past, you will be subject to the progressive tax system. This plan provides a progressive raise with a maximum rate of 56.5% for income above 250,000 euros per year. This system is however not possible for civil servants.

The mentality and culture

Admittedly, unlike some cultures where you feel like making a new friend at first contact, Portuguese are perhaps a bit more distant at first. Actually, it is just respect, politeness ... But as soon as you overpass the first hurdle, that is to say from the second contact, then you know you got yourself a contact that will last over time, someone who you can really ask for help in case of need a helping hand, someone who will open you the doors of his home with pride ...

The Portuguese are really welcoming in their own way, proud of their country, the history of their country, proud that people can be interested in their culture. Exchange with them is a real pleasure.

The Language

Although many Portuguese speak foreign languages, from beginner to advanced level, it will be important to learn the language as soon as possible. It's a matter of respect and integration.

The size of the country

If you compare a country the size of Portugal to countries like Canada and Australia, you realize the advantages of living in a small country! There is a multitude of things to see near you; every weekend, you can discover something new, just driving 20 kilometers. In continent-like country, you will rather have to drive several hours to see something new, because basically, if you're just riding a few tens of kilometers, you will land in the middle of nowhere.

The location

Portugal is wedged between Spain and the Atlantic Ocean. You're never far from the sea wherever you are in Portugal! And better yet, you have easy access to the wonderful Portuguese and Spanish archipelagos! Sea, mountain, city, countryside, villages, hills ... you have everything for everyone! And all this on a very small space, so you can access everything easily!

Administrative procedures

If you want to move to Portugal, for example for your retirement, you must comply with administrative formalities in order to realize this dream. It is not necessary to obtain a residence visa to spend his retirement in Portugal. It is possible to spend 180 days a year in Portugal provided to request authorization 90 days from the date of expiry of the first 90 days. Portuguese non residents must then apply for a residence permit to stay in Portugal beyond the 180-day period. A registration certificate for a period of five years is then delivered to the recipient. If you really want to stay in the country, you can also apply for permanent residence after having resided legally in the country for a period of at least five years.

The disadvantages

Portugal certainly has many advantages, but it is not blameless. Some disadvantages must be studied carefully before deciding to settle there. The health system is, for example, not as good as in France. Moreover the inhabitants of large cities might be somewhat disappointed by the cultural offer of the country, except perhaps Lisbon and Porto.
