Marathi Language

Marathi (मराठी) is a language spoken predominantly by Marathi people of Maharashtra, India. It is one of the 22 languages of India.

  • With 83 million speakers as of 2011, Marathi ranks 10th in the list of languages with most native speakers in the world.
  • Marathi has the third largest number of native speakers in India, after Hindi and Bengali.

  • नमस्कार! (namaskār)
  • प्रणाम! (praām)
  • अलक्ष निरंजन्! (alaksh niranjan) address used by sages or hermits
Hello (General greeting)
  • तू कसा आहेस? (tu kasā āhes) said to a man
  • तू कशी आहेस? (tu kashī āhes) said to a woman
  • तुम्ही कसे आहात? (tumhī kase āhāt) plural or polite (when addressed to a single person)
  • आपण कसे आहात? (āpaṇ kashe āhāt) plural or very polite (when addressed to a single person)
How are you?
  • मी ठीक आहे. (mī ṭīk āhe) means: I am fine.
  • मस्त! (mast) informal; means: good.
  • मी मजेत आहे. (mī majet āhe) informal; means: I am enjoying.
  • निवांत. (nivānt) spoken mostly in the countryside; means: I am relaxed.
