心 (xīn)

Today, we will learn the Chinese character 心 (xīn) which means "heart".

As a radical

As a radical inside a character, it can be written:

  • at the bottom of the character as in 想 (xiǎng), 忘 (wàng) and 怒 (nù)
  • or on the left side of the character like this: 忄as in 快 (kuài), 忆 (yì) and 怕 (pà).

The radical 心 is often present in characters relating to emotions and ‘heart’ related words.

At the bottom

  • 忘 (wàng) : to forget
  • 怒 (nù) : anger
  • 愁 (chóu) : to worry about
  • 您 (nín) : polite form of ‘you’

On the left

  • 怕 (pà) : to be afraid
  • 快 (kuài) : quick

As a character

Here are some words with the 心 character:

  • 心 (ài xīn) : to love
  • 开心 (kāi xīn) : to feel happy
  • 小心 (xiǎo xīn) : to be careful
  • 担心 (dān xīn) : anxious, worried
  • 关心 (guān xīn) : to be concerned about
