Welcome to our lesson on Japanese Vocabulary → Parts of the Body! 🤗 In this lesson, we will explore a list of common words and expressions that use parts of the body. Here is how to say the parts of the body in japanese:

kami hair
atama head
kao face
mimi ear
kubi neck
me eye
hana nose
hoho cheek
kuchi mouth
kuchibiru lips
nodo throat
ha tooth
mune chest
hara stomach
hiza knee
足首 ashikubi ankle
ashi foot / leg
つま先 tsumasaki toe
ude arm
kata shoulder
hiji elbow
手首 tekubi wrist
te hand
yubi finger
tsume fingernail
背中 senaka back

There is some interesting points.

For some parts of the body, for example in hand and wrist we can see the kanji 手. In the words ankle and leg we can see the kanji 足. So, we can easily understand the relation between close limbs.

親指 oyayubi thumb
人差し指 hitosashiyubi index finger
中指 nakayubi middle finger
薬指 kusuriyubi ring finger
小指 koyubi small finger

Common idioms[edit | edit source]

Ō me ni miru / 大目に見る : to stare somebody with large eye. Means, to be caring.

In French, it exists a similar expression but with the opposite meaning : “faire les gros yeux”.

This means to be not satisfy by the behavior of other people.

Japanese Japanese (transliteration) English
頭があかりません Atama ga akarimasen I can’t hold my head high. When you are grateful and you want to show it to somebody, you say this!
お腹がすいた O naka ga suita to get stomach empty
お腹がいっぱい O naka ga ippai to get stomach full.
喉が渇いた Nodo ga kawaita to become thirsty
耳がタコになる Mimi ga tako ni naru talking unceasingly the same thing and annoying people.
