Possessive adjectives and family names
Here is an interesting point in Italian regarding possessive adjectives and family names.
You don't use an article in front of the possessive adjective if it is in front of a family name in the singular (madre, padre, figlio, figlia, fratello, sorella, marito, moglie, ecc.).
However, you use an article in the plural.
Family name in the singular
- mia madre (fa eccezione "mamma", la mia mamma)
- tuo padre (fa eccezione "papà" e "babbo", il tuo papà, il tuo babbo)
- suo fratello
- vostra sorella
Family name in the plural
- i suoi fratelli
- le vostre sorelle
- i nostri nonni
- le sue cugine
Family name with an adjective or if modified
If the family name in the singular goes with an adjective (example: la mia sorella minore) or is modified (example: fratellino, sorellaccia, nonnino, and so on)
you add an article in front of the possessive adjective:
- il mio fratello maggiore
- la tua bella sorella
- la mia sorella sposata
- il mio fratellino
About the Possessive (loro)
With "loro" you always need the article:
Singular:
- il loro padre
- la loro madre
- il loro fratello
Plural:
- i loro fratelli
- le loro zie
- i loro nipoti
