Hello everyone!

I am MJ Mahdizadeh and we have a new lesson on Farsi.

Today let me tell you about numbers in Farsi.

First of all, we have these names for numbers in Farsi:

After mastering this lesson, you may find these related subjects intriguing: Bathroom, Months of the Year, Eastern Numerals & Astronomy.

Numbers from 0 to 10 in Farsi

  • 0 (صفر - sefr)
  • 1 (یک - yek)
  • 2 (دو - do)
  • 3 (سه - se)
  • 4 (چهار - Ch'har)
  • 5 (پنج - panj)
  • 6 (شش/شیش - shesh/shish)
  • 7 (هفت - haft)
  • 8 (هشت - hasht)
  • 9 (نه - noh)
  • 10 (ده - dah)

Important notes:

- in colloquial 1 - yek is pronounced ye / by Afghans and Tajiks it is pronounced yak

- in colloquial 5 - panj if it is combined with a verb is pronounced payn like "5 years" = "payn sāl"

Numbers above 10 in Farsi

Numbers 11 to 19 are, as it is the case in many languages, slightly irregular:

  • 11 - یازده - yāzdah
  • 12 - دوازده - davāzdah
  • 13 - سیزده - sizdah
  • 14 - چهارده - ch'hārdah
  • 15 - پانزده - pānzdah / punzdah
  • 16 - شانزده - shānzsah / shunzdah
  • 17 - هفده - hifdah
  • 18 - هجده - hijdah
  • 19 - نوزده - nuzdah

- note that Afghans and Tajiks say "hibdah" instead of "hifdah" for 17

These are the higher numbers:

  • 20 - بیست - bist
  • 30 - سی- si
  • 40 - چهل - chehel
  • 50 - پنجاه - panjāh
  • 60 - شصت - shast
  • 70 - هفتاد - haftād
  • 80 - هشتاد- hashtād
  • 90 - نود- navad
  • 100 - صد- sad
  • 1000 -هزار - hezār

If you want to say 21, 22, etc you have to use و ("o" = "and") and the numbers 1-9 from above.

  • 21 - بیست و يك - bist-o-yek
  • 22 - بیست و دو - bist-o-do

For numbers after 1000 it goes like that:

  • 2000= 2*1000 (دو هزار - do hezār)
  • 3000=3*1000 (سه هزار - se hezār)

and all the other ones follow the same rule. It is also the same for million and billion and...

Look at how we say this number:

  • 5923: پنج هزار و نهصد و بیست و سه (panj hezār o noh sad o bist o se/ o)

I hope you have enjoyed this lesson.

Good luck.
