French Vocabulary: Greetings

If you are traveling in France, you will need to know how to say hello or goodbye. Here are the main ways to greet in French:

Formal

  • Bonjour ! = hello!, good morning!
  • Bonsoir ! = hello!, good evening!
  • Bienvenue = Welcome
  • Enchanté ! = Nice to meet you!
  • Comment allez-vous ? = How are you?
  • Je m’appelle Pierre = My name is Vincent
  • Je m’appelle… = My name is Vincent
  • Enchanté ! = Nice to meet you!
  • Comment allez-vous ? = How are you?
  • Je vais bien = I am doing (going) well.
  • Et vous ? = And you?
  • A bientôt ! = See you soon!
  • Au revoir ! = Goodbye!
  • Adieu = Farewell

Informal

  • Salut ! = Hi!
  • Coucou ! = Hey there!
  • Quoi de neuf ? = What's up?
