Bonjour French learners!😀

In today's lesson we will see the main ways to express the consequence in French, classified according to their language register (Formal, Informal, and Neutral) and their frequency of use.

The most used expressions appear first.

We'll add an example and the translation in English for each expression.

Neutral[edit | edit source]

Those expressions can be spoken or witten.

donc[edit | edit source]

"Donc" is the most common way to express consequence in French.

Example:

  • Vous avez fait un long voyage, donc vous devez être fatigués.

You have made a long trip, so you must be tired.

Alors[edit | edit source]

  • J’étais à une fête chez des amis hier soir, alors je n’ai pas pu commettre ce meurtre.

I was at a party with friends last night, so I could not commit that murder.

d’où[edit | edit source]

  • Tu as de la boue sur tes chaussures et de la terre sous tes ongles. D’où je conclue que tu viens du jardin.

You have mud on your shoes and dirt under your nails. From there, I conclude that you come from the garden.

tellement … que[edit | edit source]

  • Il a tellement faim qu’il mangerait une vache entière.

He was so hungry he would eat a whole cow.

Assez … pour que[edit | edit source]

  • Il est assez grand pour que tu lui parles de ce problème.

He is old enough to talk to you about this problem.

C’est pourquoi[edit | edit source]

  • Il a un rendez-vous important demain matin. C’est pourquoi il doit se coucher tôt ce soir.

He has an important appointment tomorrow morning. That's why he has to go to bed early tonight.

c’est pour ça / cela que[edit | edit source]

Can also be written, but mostly used orally

  • La neige est tombée toute la nuit et a bloqué les routes. C’est pour cela que demain il n’y aura pas d’école.

The snow fell all night and blocked the roads. That's why tomorrow there will be no school.

Trop … pour que[edit | edit source]

+ the subjunctive

  • Il fait trop chaud pour que nous puissions travailler.

It's too hot for us to work.

tant (de) … que[edit | edit source]

  • Il a tant d’argent qu’il pourrait acheter la lune.

He has so much money that he could buy the moon.

Il faut … pour que[edit | edit source]

  • Il faut beaucoup de temps pour qu’un animal s’habitue à quelqu’un.

It takes a lot of time for an animal to get used to someone.

Au point de[edit | edit source]

  • Il est motivé au point de travailler jour et nuit sur le projet.

He is motivated to the point of working day and night on the project.

de là[edit | edit source]

  • Tu as de la boue sur tes chaussures et de la terre sous tes ongles. De là je conclue que tu viens du jardin.

You have mud on your shoes and dirt under your nails. From there, I conclude that you come from the garden.

Informal[edit | edit source]

Those expressions are mainly spoken.

comme ça[edit | edit source]

Very commonly used when speaking.

  • L’année prochaine tu entreras en pension, comme ça tu seras obligé de travailler.

Next year you'll go to boarding school, so you'll have to work.

du coup[edit | edit source]

Very commonly used when speaking.

  • Il a décidé de ne pas venir, du coup nous pouvons inviter une autre personne.

He decided not to come, so we can invite another person.

Formal[edit | edit source]

Those expressions are mainly written or used during official speeches.

si bien que[edit | edit source]

  • Il a eu un accident si bien qu'il ne peut pas venir ce soir.

He had an accident so he can not come tonight.

De (telle) sorte que[edit | edit source]

  • Tu as agi de telle sorte que nous ne pouvons plus te faire confiance.

You acted so that we can not trust you anymore.

De (telle) manière que[edit | edit source]

  • Tu as expliqué de telle manière que tout le monde a compris.

You explained in such a way that everyone understood.

De (telle) façon que[edit | edit source]

  • Ses parents l'aident de façon qu'elle n'a pas d'inquiétude financière.

Her parents help her so that she has no financial worries.

Au point que[edit | edit source]

  • Il a plu au point que la rivière a débordé.

It rained to the point that the river overflowed.

Si … que[edit | edit source]

  • Il est si grand qu’il se cogne souvent au haut des portes.

He is so tall that he often hurts himself at the top of the doors.

En conséquence[edit | edit source]

  • Vous avez commis un meurtre. En conséquence, vous êtes condamné à trente ans de prison.

You have committed murder. As a result, you are sentenced to thirty years in prison.

Par conséquent[edit | edit source]

  • Tu n’as que 16 ans. Par conséquent, tu n’as pas le droit d’acheter d’alcool.

You are only 16 years old. Therefore, you are not allowed to buy alcohol.

Dès lors[edit | edit source]

  • Il a vécu un accident d’avion. Dès lors, il n’a jamais pu remonter dans un avion.

He had a plane crash. Since then, he has never been able to get on a plane.

Aussi[edit | edit source]

  • Le CO2 provoque un effet de serre important sur Terre, aussi nous devons faire attention à ne pas en produire trop.

CO2 causes a significant greenhouse effect on Earth, so we must be careful not to produce too much.

Ainsi[edit | edit source]

  • Il parle avec un microphone, ainsi même les élèves du fond de l’amphithéâtre peuvent l’entendre.

He speaks with a microphone, so even the students from the back of the amphitheater can hear it.
