Το όνομα Ωκεανός προέρχεται από τον ομώνυμο μυθικό θεό της Ελληνικής Μυθολογίας, τον Ωκεανό. Καθιερώθηκε, ιστορικά, από τον αρχαίο Έλληνα Ιστορικό Ηρόδοτο να χαρακτηρίζεται σήμερα παγκοσμίως με το ίδιο όνομα η πολύ μεγάλη Θαλάσσια επιφάνεια. Οι Ωκεανοί είναι πέντε.
