How to turn an adjective into an adverb


General rule

Many adverbs are formed from adjectives by adding -ly:

  • beautiful becomes beautifully
  • bad become badly


Adjectives having 2 syllables and ending in -y

   

If an adjective has 2 syllables and ends in -y, replace the final -y with -ily:

  • easy becomes easily
  • happy becomes happily

   

Adjectives ending with a consonant followed by -le

If an adjective ends with a consonant followed by -le, replace the final -e with -y:

  • terrible becomes terribly
  • comfortable becomes comfortably

Adjectives ending in -ly

Adjectives ending in -ly cannot be turned into adverbs by adding -ly.

You need to use a different structure:

  • For example "in a lovely way".
