Pulaar Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Pulaar learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about adjectives in Pulaar. Adjectives are words that modify or describe nouns. They give more information about the noun they are modifying. Adjectives could describe the size, color, age, quality, and origin of the noun. Let's dive in!

Don't miss the chance to check out these pages as you wrap up this lesson: Give Your Opinion, Pronouns & Gender.

Adjectives in Pulaar[edit | edit source]

In Pulaar, adjectives are usually placed after the noun they are describing. For example, consider the sentence:

  • Ndaw tawtol ko. (Big elephant)

Ndaw means elephant and tawtol means big. Notice that in Pulaar, the adjective is placed after the noun it is describing.

However, sometimes adjectives can be placed before the noun they describe. For example:

  • Jenngirde yoro. (Red flower)

Jenngirde means red and yoro means flower. In this case, the adjective is placed before the noun.

Examples of Adjectives[edit | edit source]

Here are some examples of adjectives in Pulaar:

Pulaar Pronunciation English
wallaaji wa-la-ji young
yimɓeeri yi-m-bee-ri tall
xonkarr hon-karr beautiful
lumoore loom-oo-re old
waldi wal-di small

Using Adjectives in Sentences[edit | edit source]

Let's look at some examples of how we can use adjectives in sentences.

  • Person 1: Ndaw wallaaji ko. (Young elephant)
  • Person 2: Waaw, ko adunaamaa la! (Wow, it's so cute!)

In this example, the adjective wallaaji (young) is describing the noun ndaw (elephant). Person 2 is expressing admiration for the young elephant by exclaiming waaw, ko adunaamaa la! (Wow, it's so cute!)

Here's another example:

  • Person 1: Ko jenngirde wiyeteeru yero. (I saw a red car.)
  • Person 2: Mi yow na kala! (I want one too!)

In this example, the adjective jenngirde (red) is describing the noun wiyeteeru (car). Person 2 responds by expressing interest in wanting one too.

Comparison of Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Pulaar, adjectives can be compared using the words labuuji (more) and laawol (less).

For example:

  • Moorom laawol ko (Less tall tree)
  • Ndaw labuuji ko (More big elephant)

Practice Makes Perfect[edit | edit source]

The best way to practice using adjectives in Pulaar is to use them in sentences. Try describing things around you using adjectives. For example, if you see a beautiful flower, you can say Jenngirde xonkarr ngam fiyannde. (This is a beautiful red flower).
