It is important to note that the Yoruba language is a tonal language, which means that the meaning of a word changes depending on the tone used to pronounce it. There are three tones in Yoruba: High (á), Mid (ọ), and Low (à).
Yoruba Pronunciation
Yoruba language has simple phonetics, which makes it easy to learn and pronounce. Below are some of the basic rules of Yoruba pronunciations:
- Yoruba language has five vowel sounds: "a", "e", "ẹ", "i", and "o".
- Yoruba language is a tonal language. As I mentioned earlier, the tone of a word can change its meaning. For example, the word "àbí" means "or" in Yoruba when pronounced with a low tone, but it means "asked" when pronounced with a high tone.
Below are some examples of Yoruba words and their proper pronunciation:
Yoruba | Pronunciation | English |
