Hi Cebuano learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the Future Tense in Cebuano. Future Tense is used to describe actions that will happen in the future. Knowing how to use the future tense in Cebuano will help you convey your thoughts and ideas better. Let's get started!
Formation
To form the Future Tense in Cebuano, you need to add the word "mag" before the verb. For example:
Cebuano | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Mag-trabaho ka | mag-tɾa'bo-ho ka | You will work |
Mag-kaon ako ug pinya | mag-ka'on 'ako 'ug 'pi-'nya | I will eat pineapple |
Mag-lakaw ta sa parke | mag-la-'kaw ta sa paɾ-'ke | We will walk to the park |
Negation
To make a negative sentence in future tense, you simply add "dili" before "mag". For example:
Cebuano | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Dili mag-trabaho ka | di'li mag-tɾa'bo-ho ka | You will not work |
Dili mag-kaon ako ug pinya | di'li mag-ka'on 'ako 'ug 'pi-'nya | I will not eat pineapple |
Dili mag-lakaw ta sa parke | di'li mag-la-'kaw ta sa paɾ-'ke | We will not walk to the park |
Time expressions
To specify the time when the action will happen, you can add time expressions before or after the sentence. Here are some time expressions in Cebuano:
- Ugma - Tomorrow - Sunod nga semana - Next week - Buwag sa adlaw - In days - Sa Domingo - On Sunday - Human sa tulo ka adlaw - After three days - Karon - Now
For example:
Cebuano | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
Mag-miaging adlaw magtuon ko | mag-mi-'a-ging 'ad-law mag-tuon ko | I will study tomorrow |
Maglibog ko sunod nga semana | mag-li-'bog ko su-'nod nga se-'ma-na | I will think next week |
Musulti siya sa iya amahan human sa tulo ka adlaw | mu-'sul-ti si'ya sa i'ya a-'ma-han hu-'man sa 'tu-lo ka 'ad-law | He will talk to his father after three days |
Dialogues
Here are some dialogues to help you understand how Future Tense works:
- Person 1: Unsa may imong buhaton ugma? (What will you do tomorrow?)
- Person 2: Magtuon ko ug Binisaya. (I will study Cebuano.)
- Person 1: Aduna kay plano karon? (Do you have plans now?)
- Person 2: Maglibog ko unsay akong buhaton karong gabii. (I will think about what I will do tonight.)
- Person 1: Unsay imong huna-huna sa sunod nga semana? (What are you thinking for next week?)
- Person 2: Maglakaw ko sa bukid. (I will hike in the mountains.)
Cultural tips
- Cebuanos are fond of planning ahead of time. It is common for them to set goals and make plans for the future. - When talking about future events, it is polite to use the future tense instead of the present tense. It shows that you respect the time of the person you are talking to.
Practice
Practice your knowledge of Future Tense in Cebuano by using it in your conversations with native speakers. To find native speakers, you can use Find native speakers and ask them any questions!
