Belarusian Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Belarusian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Belarusian. We will look at the conjugation of the verb and how it is used in different contexts. We will also look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be".

The verb "be" in Belarusian is conjugated as follows:

Person Singular Plural
I Я быў (ya byŭ) Мы былі (my byli)
You Ты быў (ty byŭ) Вы былі (vy byli)
He/She/It Ён/Ёна/Ё быў (yon/yona/yo byŭ) Яны былі (yany byli)

The verb "be" is used in many different contexts. It can be used to describe a person's physical or mental state, such as "I am tired" or "He is happy". It can also be used to describe a person's location, such as "I am here" or "She is there". It can also be used to describe a person's occupation, such as "I am a teacher" or "He is a doctor".

Here are some examples of sentences using the verb "be":

  • Person 1: Я здароў (ya zdarov) - I'm fine.
  • Person 2: Я з Беларусі (ya z Belarusi) - I'm from Belarus.
  • Person 1: Я дактар (ya daktar) - I'm a doctor.
  • Person 2: Я захапляюся (ya zakhaplyayusya) - I'm busy.

The verb "be" can also be used in the past tense. Here are some examples of sentences using the verb "be" in the past tense:

  • Person 1: Я быў спакойны (ya byŭ spakoyny) - I was calm.
  • Person 2: Я быў ў Беларусі (ya byŭ u Belarusi) - I was in Belarus.
  • Person 1: Я быў дактар (ya byŭ daktar) - I was a doctor.
  • Person 2: Я быў заняты (ya byŭ zanyaty) - I was busy.

The verb "be" can also be used in the future tense. Here are some examples of sentences using the verb "be" in the future tense:

  • Person 1: Я буду спакойны (ya budu spakoyny) - I will be calm.
  • Person 2: Я буду ў Беларусі (ya budu u Belarusi) - I will be in Belarus.
