Hi Sinhala learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Sinhala. Negation is the process of making a statement negative. It is an important part of the Sinhala language and can be used to express a variety of meanings.
Negation is formed by adding the particle නැත (nētha) to the end of a sentence. This particle is used to negate a statement or question. For example:
Sinhala | Pronunciation | English Translation |
---|---|---|
මම කියන්නේ නැත | mama kiyannē nētha | I don't know |
ඔයා දිනයක් නැත | ōyā dinayak nētha | He doesn't have a date |
ඔයා කියන්නේ නැත | ōyā kiyannē nētha | He doesn't know |
ඔයා ආරම්භ කරන්නේ නැත | ōyā āramh karannē nētha | He isn't ready |
The particle නැත (nētha) can also be used to form negative questions. For example:
Sinhala | Pronunciation | English Translation |
---|---|---|
ඔයා කියන්නේ නැතද? | ōyā kiyannē nēthadē? | Doesn't he know? |
ඔයා ආරම්භ කරන්නේ නැතද? | ōyā āramh karannē nēthadē? | Isn't he ready? |
ඔයා දිනයක් නැතද? | ōyā dinayak nēthadē? | Doesn't he have a date? |
මම කියන්නේ නැතද? | mama kiyannē nēthadē? | Don't I know? |
It is important to note that the particle නැත (nētha) is not used when forming negative sentences with verbs that already contain a negative meaning. For example:
Sinhala | Pronunciation | English Translation |
---|---|---|
මම නොකියෙන්නේ | mama nōkiyennē | I don't understand |
ඔයා නොආරම්භ කරන්නේ | ōyā nōāramh karannē | He isn't ready |
ඔයා නොදිනයක් තිබේ | ōyā nōdinayak thibē | He doesn't have a date |
ඔයා නොකියෙන්නේ | ōyā nōkiyennē | He doesn't know |
It is also important to note that the particle නැත (nētha) is not used when forming negative sentences with adjectives. For example:
Sinhala | Pronunciation | English Translation |
---|---|---|
මම ප්රසාදයෙන් නැත | mama prasādayen nētha | I'm not happy |
ඔයා ප්රසාදයෙන් නැත | ōyā prasādayen nētha | He's not happy |
ඔයා ප්රධානයෙන් නැත | ōyā prarānayen nētha | He's not strong |
මම ප්රධානයෙන් නැත | mama prarānayen nētha | I'm not strong |
