Korean Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Korean learners! ๐Ÿ˜Š
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Korean. We will look at how to form sentences in the future tense and how to use them in everyday conversations.

The future tense in Korean is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. It is formed by adding the verb stem + ๊ฒ ๋‹ค to the end of the sentence. For example:

  • ๋‚˜๋Š” ์ผ์š”์ผ์— ์ˆ˜์˜ํ•  ๊ฒƒ์ด๋‹ค - I will go swimming on Sunday.

The verb stem is the base form of the verb without any endings. For example, the verb stem for ๋จน๋‹ค (to eat) is ๋จน-. To form the future tense, you just need to add ๊ฒ ๋‹ค to the end of the verb stem. So the future tense of ๋จน๋‹ค would be ๋จน๊ฒ ๋‹ค.

You can also use the future tense to make predictions or guesses about the future. For example:

  • ๋‚ด์ผ์€ ๋น„๊ฐ€ ์˜ฌ ๊ฒƒ ๊ฐ™์•„ - I think it will rain tomorrow.

In this sentence, the speaker is making a guess about what will happen in the future.

The future tense can also be used to express intention or desire. For example:

  • ๋‚˜๋Š” ๋‚ด์ผ ์ˆ˜์˜ํ•˜๊ธฐ๋กœ ๊ฒฐ์ •ํ–ˆ์–ด - I have decided to go swimming tomorrow.

In this sentence, the speaker is expressing their intention to do something in the future.

It is important to note that the future tense cannot be used to talk about events that are happening right now. For example, you cannot say ๋‚˜๋Š” ์ง€๊ธˆ ์ˆ˜์˜ํ•  ๊ฒƒ์ด๋‹ค - I will go swimming now. Instead, you should use the present tense to talk about events that are happening right now.

Here is a table with some examples of the future tense in Korean:
