Hi Amharic learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Amharic. We will look at how to form sentences in the future tense, as well as some examples of how to use it in conversation.
The future tense in Amharic is formed by adding a suffix to the verb. The suffixes used depend on the subject of the sentence. For example, if the subject is "I", the suffix is "-ን". If the subject is "you", the suffix is "-ም".
The following table shows the suffixes for each subject:
Subject | Suffix |
---|---|
I | -ን |
You | -ም |
He/She/It | -ኝ |
We | -እን |
You (plural) | -ኛም |
They | -ኝና |
For example, the verb "to go" in Amharic is "መጣችሁ" (mätätchuh). To form the future tense, the appropriate suffix is added to the end of the verb. So, "I will go" is "መጣችሁን" (mätätchuhn).
Here are some more examples of how to use the future tense in Amharic:
Amharic | Pronunciation | English Translation |
---|---|---|
እኔ ይመጣችሁን | ene yimätätchuhn | I will go |
እርሱ ይመጣችሁኝ | ersu yimätätchuhn | He/She/It will go |
እኛ ይመጣችሁእን | ena yimätätchuhn | We will go |
እርስ ይመጣችሁም | ersu yimätätchuhm | You will go |
እርስና ይመጣችሁኝና | ersuna yimätätchuhnna | They will go |
Now that you know how to form sentences in the future tense, let's look at some examples of how to use it in conversation.
If someone asks you what you are going to do tomorrow, you can say "እኔ አዲስ አመት ይመጣችሁን" (ene adis amet yimätätchuhn), which means "I will go tomorrow".
If someone asks you what you are going to do next week, you can say "እኔ አሁን አረንቴ ይመጣችሁን" (ene ahun arant yimätätchuhn), which means "I will go next week".
If someone asks you what you are going to do next month, you can say "እኔ አሁን ወር ይመጣችሁን" (ene ahun wer yimätätchuhn), which means "I will go next month".
Now that you know how to form sentences in the future tense and how to use it in conversation, you are ready to start using it in your own conversations.
