Ewe Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Ewe learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Ewe. We will look at how to form the future tense and how to use it in sentences.

Forming the Future Tense

The future tense in Ewe is formed by adding the suffix -ɖe to the verb stem. For example, the verb stem for "to go" is ɖo, so the future tense of "to go" is ɖoɖe.

Examples

Ewe Pronunciation English Translation
ɖoɖe /dɔɖɛ/ to go (future)
kpɔɖe /kpɔɖɛ/ to come (future)
nyeɖe /nyɛɖɛ/ to eat (future)
hiaɖe /hiaɖɛ/ to drink (future)

Using the Future Tense

The future tense is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future. It can also be used to make predictions about the future.

Examples

  • Míɖoɖe le mínye. (I will go and eat.)
  • Míkpɔɖe le míhia. (I will come and drink.)
  • Míɖoɖe le mínyeɖe. (I will go and eat.)
  • Mínyeɖe le míhiaɖe. (I will eat and drink.)
  • Míɖoɖe le míkpɔɖe. (I will go and come.)
  • Mínyeɖe le míhiaɖe. (I will eat and drink.)
