Hi Italian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender of nouns in Italian. We will look at the rules for determining the gender of nouns and practice with some examples. Let's get started!
Rules
In Italian, nouns are either masculine or feminine. There are some general rules that can help you determine the gender of a noun.
- Nouns ending in -o are usually masculine.
- Nouns ending in -a are usually feminine.
- Nouns ending in -e can be either masculine or feminine.
- Nouns ending in -i are usually masculine.
- Nouns ending in -u are usually masculine.
However, there are some exceptions to these rules. For example, the noun amico (friend) is masculine, even though it ends in -o. The noun amica (female friend) is also feminine, even though it ends in -a.
Examples
Here are some examples of nouns and their genders:
Italian | Pronunciation | English Translation | Gender |
---|---|---|---|
amico | ah-mee-koh | friend | Masculine |
amica | ah-mee-kah | female friend | Feminine |
libro | lee-broh | book | Masculine |
casa | kah-zah | house | Feminine |
bambino | bahm-bee-noh | child | Masculine |
bambina | bahm-bee-nah | girl | Feminine |
