As a Standard Estonian language teacher, I believe it is equally important to learn about the culture of a country along with its language. Estonian media and communication are important parts of the country’s culture that can provide a glimpse into the daily lives of Estonian people. In this lesson, we will discover the various media outlets and communication tools commonly used in Estonia.
Estonian Media Outlets
Estonia has a diverse range of media outlets that cater to the needs of the people. As a country with a small population, Estonian media is not as big as that of its neighboring countries like Finland, Sweden, or Russia, but it sure is a proud part of their culture. Here are some of the most popular media outlets in Estonia:
- Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) - a public media platform that produces TV and radio programs in Estonian, Russian, and English languages.
- Postimees - one of the oldest newspapers in Estonia, founded in 1857. It has been providing informative news to the Estonians consistently.
- Delfi - an online news portal that provides 24/7 news and other informative articles such as lifestyle, entertainment, and sports. It is the most visited online news portal in Estonia.
- TV3 - one of the largest commercial TV channels in Estonia that provides TV programs, like news, entertainment, sports, etc., in Estonian.
- ERR News - an English-language news portal that provides news about Estonia to the English-speaking world.
Estonian Communication Tools
Estonia’s communication landscape is continuously evolving and offers a variety of tools to connect with people. Some of the commonly used communication tools in Estonia are:
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones are the most common and convenient mode of communication in Estonia. Estonia has one of the highest mobile phone penetrations in the world, with more mobile phones in use than people.
Internet and Social Media
Estonia has one of the fastest internet connections globally, as the Estonian government invested heavily in the country's digital infrastructure in the '90s. The internet usage rate in Estonia is also very high, with approximately 75% of the population using it daily. Estonians are also avid users of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
Email is still one of the primary means of communication in Estonia, especially when it comes to business communication.
Summary
Estonian media and communication tools offer a great insight into the country’s culture and its dynamic people. In this lesson, we have learned about the various media outlets and communication tools used in Estonia.
