Kinyarwanda Vocabulary - Count to 10

Hi Kinyarwanda learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to count from one to ten in Kinyarwanda. Counting is an essential aspect of language, and mastering it in Kinyarwanda will help you in daily conversations.

Numbers

Here are the numbers from 1 to 10 in Kinyarwanda:

Numbers
Kinyarwanda Pronunciation English
rimwe (ˈɾimwɛ) one
pili (ˈpili) two
tatu (ˈtatʊ) three
kane (ˈkane) four

Now let's put these new words into context. Here is a dialogue between a teacher and a student:

  • Student: Muraho!
  • Teacher: Ujya kuri taxi ya gatanu?
  • Student: Oya, naje kuri taxi ya cumi.
  • Teacher: Oya, kandi na pili cyane.
  • Student: Murakoze, mwaramutse.

Translation:

  • Teacher: Hello!
  • Student: Hello!
  • Teacher: Are you going on the sixth taxi?
  • Student: No, I am going on the seventh taxi.
  • Teacher: Okay, and there are many people with me on the second one.
  • Student: Thank you, good morning.

Cultural insights

In Kinyarwanda, numbers have a significant cultural significance used during naming or used explicitly for social status in the case of the Abahinza people. Knowing how to count can help you understand better the importance of numbers in Rwandan culture.

Practice and additional resources

To practice and improve your counting skills, you can try to count daily objects, such as trees or cars, in Kinyarwanda. Also, check the Kinyarwanda native speakers and ask them any questions related to numbers. Remember that you can also find additional vocabulary on the Polyglot Club website.
