Fon Vocabulary - Colors

Hi Fon learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn the Fon vocabulary for colors. Knowing the colors will help you expand your day-to-day communication in Fon. As always, we will include cultural information and interesting facts. So, let's get started!

Basic Colors

Let's start with the basic colors:

Fon Pronunciation English
blù blù blue
wɛ̀ɛ̀ wɛ̀ɛ̀ white
dùù dùù black
xwɛ̀tì t͡ʃʷɛ̂ːtì red
zɔ̀ɔ̀gó zɔ̀ɔ̀gó green
yɔ̂ jɔ̂ː yellow
nímà nímà brown

Fon colors are rich, warm, and have deep cultural meanings. For example, the color white is a symbol of purity, peace, and clarity. White is used during traditional ceremonies and is worn during funerals. The color black represents death and evil spirits. It is common to see people wearing black clothes during mourning or funerals.

Other Colors

Here are some other colors in Fon:

Fon Pronunciation English
lɛ̀lɛ̀ lɛ̀lɛ̀ pink
óòfì óòfì purple
ŋwélègʷènì ŋwélègʷènì orange
búsínì búsínì gray

Did you know that each color has its own unique meaning in Fon culture? For instance, the color pink represents a playful and flirtatious attitude, while purple represents royalty and nobility.

Fun Dialogue

Here is a fun dialogue using some of the Fon colors we just learned:

  • Person 1: Nɔ́nɔ̀, blú wùù nónɔ̀? (Hey, do you want a blue shirt?)
  • Person 2: Aò, mɛ̀ nùù dùù wùù. (No, I want a black shirt.)
  • Person 1: Xwɛ̀tì ù ɖè? (What about a red one?)
  • Person 2: Hmm, aòfì, m̀ nùù xwɛ̀tì wùù. (Hmm, I prefer purple.)
