Central Khmer Vocabulary - Animals

Hi Central Khmer learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about animals in Central Khmer. Animals play an important role in Khmer culture, and some Khmer people believe that they possess mystical powers. For instance, in Cambodia, the cow is considered a sacred animal, often used in traditional ceremonies to draw power from the spirits.

Domestic Animals

In Cambodia, it is common to have domestic animals around the house. Here are some of the most common ones.

សត្វ sak dog
កូនសត្វ kun sak puppy
មេឃ mek cat
កូនមេឃ kun mek kitten
ជូ chu pig
ស្រណោះ sroneah chicken
ស្ពាន spean duck

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ជា​ម៉ូលដេក​ត្រចៀក! (Chamol dek tracheak!) (Good morning, dog!)
  • Person 2: វា​ខ្ញុំមាន​ឈ្មោះ​គួណដូង។ (Vah khnhom mean chomne kung dong.) (His name is Brownie.)

Wild Animals

Cambodia has an abundance of wildlife, and many species can be found in the country's national parks and reserves. Here are some of the most common wild animals in Cambodia.

រស្មុក romork deer
មន្តី monday monkey
ត្រី tri fish
ដំណាំមង្គល dmaen mngol crocodile

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: សូម​ជំរាបសួរ។ មាស​ជា​អំពើ​អ្នក​បាន​ច្រាន​ចេញ​ទៅ​អ្វី? (Som jomreab sour sva. Meas jea ompae anh baan chran cheng tae avy?) (Hello, what animal did you see today?)
  • Person 2: គ្រុន​ព្រលឹង​ប្រធានាធិបតី។ (Krun preleng proh-teebot.) (A group of elephants were playing.)

Marine Animals

As Cambodia has a coastline, it is no surprise that there are many marine animals to be found in the oceans surrounding the country. Here are some words to know if you are going to the beach.

ឃុំពោត khom pot lobster
ត្រីត្រូច tri truch shrimp
មាត់គៀវ matakiew clam

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: តាម​ចំណូល​ដើម្បី​ប្រើ​ស្ទឹង​របស់​ប្រទេស​ខ្មែរ​ត្រូវ​ទិញ​អំពេញ​ប៉ុណ្ណោះ។ (Tov chomnoa daombai bruosmong Khmer troeung tomhing ampeang bonn.) (To use Cambodia's crabs, you should buy them alive.)
  • Person 2: ស្ពាន​ដោយ​កែ​ប្រសើរ! (Spearn doy kae prosair!) (The duck is swimming gracefully!)


Insects

Insects play an important role in Cambodia, especially as a source of food. Here are some common insect words that you may hear if you visit Cambodia.

មីនដុង min dong termite

Dialogue:

  • Person 2: អូនចង់​ញៀនល្អ​បំផុត​ដុំ​ម្ទេស​ប៉េ! (Aun chngai nerng la' bomphot dom maspea!) (I want to try the tasty fried crickets, please!)
