Burmese Vocabulary - Express Surprise

Expressions of Surprise

There are several ways to express surprise in Burmese, ranging from mild surprise to shock. Here are some of the most common expressions:

1. မှားတယ်ဆိုတာကို (hmat ta sayto cho)

This phrase can be used to show mild surprise, similar to the English phrase "Oh really?" or "Is that so?"

• Example:

 * Person 1: ဒီနေ့လည်းမှားတယ်ဆိုတာကို။ (Diné Nae La Hmat Ta Sayto Cho) (I heard that today.)
 * Person 2: ကိုယ်တိုင် ရိုးရိုးလုပ်ရပါမယ်။ (kyay tot ngain yu yu loe pare may) (Yes, yes, it's true.)

2. လိုကျင့်တာ (loi kjin tha)

This phrase expresses astonishment similar to the English phrase "Oh my goodness!"

• Example:

 * Person 1: ပြန်လာခဲ့တာကို (Pyin La Kae Ta To Cho) (I've been invited to a party.)
 * Person 2: လိုကျင့်တာ။ (loi kjin tha) (Oh my goodness!)

3. အမြဲလို့လာလို့ (amye loe lar loe)

This phrase can be used to show surprise and disbelief at the same time. It's similar to the English phrase "No way!"

• Example:

 * Person 1: မိုးပွန်းက ၁၀၀၀ ရှိအဖြစ်ဆိုရင်တော့ ဘယ်လိုကျိုက်လို့လဲ။ (Moe Pwan Ka A Hpa Sein Hto Taw Mae Bae Byi Lo?) (How can Moe Pwan have 1,000?)
 * Person 2: အမြဲလို့လာလို့။ (amye loe lar loe) (No way!)

4. ေကတယောင်း (kae ta yaung)

This phrase is used to express shock or disbelief, similar to the English phrase "Oh my God!"

• Example:

 * Person 1: ကျန်စွာလောလောလောလို့လဲ။ (Kyin Sway Law Law La Loe Mae) (It's raining so heavily!)
 * Person 2: ေကတယောင်း။ (kae ta yaung) (Oh my God!)

These expressions of surprise are not the only ones you can use in Burmese, but they are some of the most commonly used.

It's important to be able to react properly when someone expresses surprise to you. Here are some possible responses:

• ဟိုနိကြည့်။ (hoinyinkin) – "Don't mention it."
• အိမ်မှာလာ။ (Ain mhar lar) – "It happens."
