Bulgarian Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Bulgarian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the Future Tense in Bulgarian.

Introduction

The Future Tense in Bulgarian is used to talk about actions that will happen after the present moment. In Bulgarian, the Future Tense is formed by adding specific endings to the verb. There are three sets of endings depending on the gender of the noun: -А, -Я, and -Е.

Conjugation

To form the Future Tense, simply add the appropriate ending to the verb.

Conjugation for -А verbs

The -А verbs are the most common in Bulgarian. To conjugate them in the Future Tense, we add the following endings depending on the gender of the noun:

Bulgarian Pronunciation English
ще танцув+а (+[a]) sheh tantsuv-ah I will dance
ще танцув+аш (+[a]sh) sheh tantsuv-ash You will dance
ще танцув+а (+[a]) sheh tantsuv-ah He/She/It will dance
ще танцув+аме (+ame) sheh tantsuv-ah-meh We will dance
ще танцув+ате (+ate) sheh tantsuv-ah-teh You (plural) will dance
ще танцув+ат (+at) sheh tantsuv-ah-t They will dance

Conjugation for -Я verbs

The -Я verbs are verbs that end in -я in their present form. To conjugate them, we add the following endings:

Bulgarian Pronunciation English
ще ям (+yam) sheh yam I will eat
ще яд+еш (+yadesh) sheh yad-esh You will eat
ще яде (+yade) sheh yade He/She/It will eat
ще яд+ем (+yadem) sheh yad-em We will eat
ще яд+ете (+yadete) sheh yad-ete You (plural) will eat
ще яд+ат (+yadat) sheh yad-at They will eat

Conjugation for -Е verbs

The -Е verbs are verbs that end in -е in their present form. To conjugate them, we add the following endings:

Bulgarian Pronunciation English
ще говор+я (+govorya) sheh govorya I will speak
ще говор+иш (+govorish) sheh govori-sh You will speak
ще говор+и (+govori) sheh govori He/She/It will speak
ще говор+им (+govorim) sheh govori-m We will speak
ще говор+ите (+govorite) sheh govori-te You (plural) will speak
ще говор+ят (+govoryat) sheh govory-at They will speak

Examples

To better understand the Future Tense in Bulgarian, here are a few examples:

  • Person 1: Коя книга да прочета? (Which book should I read?)
  • Person 2: Ще предпочетеш ли детективската или фентъзи книга? (Will you prefer the detective book or the fantasy book?)
  • Person 1: Кога ще се видим отново? (When will we see each other again?)
  • Person 2: Ще се видим в следващата събота. (We will see each other next Saturday.)
  • Person 1: Какво ще правим днес? (What will we do today?)
  • Person 2: Ще ходим на разходка в парка. (We will go for a walk in the park.)
