Xhosa Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Xhosa learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be learning about the future tense in Xhosa. We will look at how to form sentences in the future tense, as well as some examples of how it is used. By the end of this lesson, you will have a better understanding of how to use the future tense in Xhosa.

Forming Sentences in the Future Tense

The future tense in Xhosa is formed by adding the suffix -a to the verb stem. For example, the verb "to go" is "ya", so the future tense of "to go" is "yaya".

The future tense can also be formed by using the verb "ukuba" (to be) and the infinitive form of the verb. For example, "I will go" is "Ndiyayiva".

Examples

Xhosa Pronunciation English Translation
Ndiyayiva n-dee-yah-yee-vah I will go
Uyayifunda oo-yah-yee-foon-dah He/She will study
Siyayenza see-yah-yen-zah We will do
Bayayithanda bah-yah-yee-thahn-dah They will like

Uses of the Future Tense

The future tense is used to talk about actions that will take place in the future. It can also be used to make predictions or assumptions about the future.

For example:

  • Ndiyayiva kwimini elandelayo. (I will go tomorrow.)
  • Uyayifunda ukufunda okwesibini. (He/She will study for the exam.)
  • Siyayenza ukubuyisa imali. (We will return the money.)
  • Bayayithanda ukudla kwethu. (They will like our food.)

The future tense can also be used to express wishes or hopes for the future.

For example:

  • Ndiyayithanda ukuba ndikwazi ukufunda Xhosa. (I wish I could learn Xhosa.)
  • Uyayifunda ukuba abantu bazive ukuba kufuneka sizivele. (He/She hopes that people will understand that we need to know.)
  • Siyayenza ukuba siyifunde ngokufanelekileyo. (We want to learn properly.)
  • Bayayithanda ukuba bayifunde ngokufanelekileyo. (They want to learn properly.)
