Javanese Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Javanese learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be discussing the future tense in Javanese. The future tense is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. It is important to understand how to use the future tense correctly in order to communicate effectively in Javanese.

Forming the Future Tense

The future tense in Javanese is formed by adding the suffix -a to the verb stem. For example, the verb "to go" is "mangga" and the future tense of this verb is "manggaa".

Examples

Javanese Pronunciation English Translation
nulis nu-lis to write
nulisa nu-li-sa will write
mbok m-bok to eat
mboka m-bo-ka will eat
nggawe ng-ga-we to do
nggawea ng-ga-we-a will do

Negative Future Tense

The negative future tense is formed by adding the suffix -a and the negative particle ora to the verb stem. For example, the verb "to go" is "mangga" and the negative future tense of this verb is "manggaora".

Examples

Javanese Pronunciation English Translation
nulis nu-lis to write
nulisora nu-li-so-ra will not write
mbok m-bok to eat
mbokora m-bo-ko-ra will not eat
nggawe ng-ga-we to do
nggaweora ng-ga-we-o-ra will not do

Questions in the Future Tense

Questions in the future tense are formed by adding the suffix -a and the interrogative particle apa to the verb stem. For example, the verb "to go" is "mangga" and the interrogative future tense of this verb is "manggaapa".

Examples

Javanese Pronunciation English Translation
nulis nu-lis to write
nulisapa nu-li-sa-pa will you write?
mbok m-bok to eat
mbokapa m-bo-ka-pa will you eat?
nggawe ng-ga-we to do
nggaweapa ng-ga-we-a-pa will you do?
